When Too Many Cooks Manage the Gear

Let’s get real for a second—managing all the equipment and assets in a police department isn’t as simple as handing out keys or signing off on a clipboard. I’ve lived that life, and if you’ve ever worked in law enforcement, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

The Classic Problem: Too Many Hands, Too Many Systems

Here’s what usually happens:
You’ve got one group handling tasers, another group in charge of vehicles, someone else tracking radios, and maybe another person overseeing body cameras. Sounds organized, right? Not so fast.

The real issue isn’t just that there are multiple administrators. It’s that each group is often using its own system—sometimes it’s a spreadsheet, sometimes it’s a fancy software, sometimes it’s just a stack of paper in a desk drawer. The result? No one up the chain can actually see everything at once. If you’re a supervisor, you’re constantly chasing down info, sending emails, making calls, and hoping you’re not missing something important.

And let’s not forget the classic “too many cooks in the kitchen” scenario. Everyone’s making changes, adding their own flavor, and sometimes, things just get lost in the shuffle. Maybe a taser goes missing, or a vehicle isn’t where it’s supposed to be. It’s nobody’s fault and everybody’s fault at the same time.

So, What’s the Fix?

Honestly, the best solution is an integrated software platform. I’m talking about a system where everything lives in one place.  Here’s how it should work:

  • Role-Based Access: People only see and do what’s relevant to their job. Maybe an officers can only view info equipment issued to them, while a supervisor can make changes. The higher you go, the more you can see and do.
  • All-In-One Dashboard: Whether it’s tasers, body cams, or fleet vehicles, you can see it all in one spot. No more bouncing between systems or hunting down paper trails.
  • Integration with Other Tools: If you’re using Axon for your tasers and body cams, or some fleet management software for vehicles, a good system will pull all that data together. Now, you don’t have to log in to five different platforms just to get a clear picture.

Why Does This Matter?

Because when everyone is looking at the same single source of truth, things just work better. No more duplicate data, no more missing gear, no more finger-pointing. Decision-makers can actually make decisions because they have the info they need, right when they need it.

The Bottom Line

Multiple people managing assets isn’t the problem—it’s multiple systems and lack of communication that cause headaches. Bring everything together, set clear roles, and suddenly, the chaos turns into clarity.

If you’re tired of chasing down equipment or playing detective with your own inventory, maybe it’s time to get all your “chefs” cooking in the same kitchen. Trust me, it makes a world of difference. Click on this link to schedule a demo with me
